The Chatham Saw Mill, the most prominent saw mills in Asia, is the oldest and largest saw mill ever built in Asia and was built to meet the demand for sawed timber. Sawed timber in those days was very much in demand. It was used mainly for construction. This saw mill produced sawed timber for Port Blair and Chatham Island. Today the Forest Department owns the saw mill. The mill was established in the year 1883. The Second World War destroyed the mill badly by the direct hit of many bombs. The jail was designed in way that the prisoners could not communicate with each other in any way. This was their target, to keep the prisoners, especially the political prisoners in total isolation. This jail has been made a National Memorial because it occupies a very important place in the history of Indian freedom struggle. The prisoners were sent here to serve the punishment called ‘kaala pani‘. The construction of this jail was completed in the year 1906. It is called the Cellular Jail because cells were built for individual prisoners. The intention was to keep each prisoner separate from another. This is a must-visit place.
